Tom Cowin
L2025 Doctoral Tutor in International Relations

Research

Tom's first love is history, and locates his work at the intersection of Intellectual History, International Relations Theory and International Political Economy. Tom's PhD research project examines how the Hegemonic Classes in America have (attempted to) undermined the populist challenge they have faced from Occupy, from the Tea Party, and from Donald Trump, in the decade following the Global Financial Crisis.

Outside of his work on American Hegemony and Counter-Hegemony, Tom is interested in: the 2007-8 Global Financial Crisis, Brexit, Post-Truth, Populism, and the thought of Antonio Gramsci and the New Gramscians. He is affiliated with the Centre for Advanced International Theory (CAIT).
